The definite article is the word "𝐭𝐑𝐞".
It is used before a noun to define it as something specific (e.g. something previously mentioned or noun, something unique, or something being identified by the speaker).

The Definite Article Rules / Examples

  • 1. We use the with singular and plural nouns,when we talk about something that we have already mentioned.

    (ex: There is a book on the desk. The book is opened.)

  • 2. We talk about something unique.

    (ex: We cannot see the sun today because of the clouds.)

  • 3. We talk about Ocean’s names.

    (ex: The Pacific Ocean.)

  • 4. Rivers

    (ex: The Danube)

  • 5. Seas

    (ex: The Black Sea)

  • 6. Deserts

    (ex: The Sahara)

  • 7. Mountain ranges

    (ex: The Carpathians)

  • 8 Some countries

    (ex: The England)

  • 9. The names of hotels

    (ex: The Continental)

  • 10. Cinemas and museums

    (ex: The Louvre)

  • 11. Musical instruments

    (ex: She plays the guitar every day.)

  • 12. With expressions like: in the morning, in the afternoon, at the weekend

    (ex: I wake up in the morning.)
